A Christian Home

“Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young-- a place near your altar, O LORD Almighty, my King and my God” (Psalm 84:3 NIV)

After the Baptism of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car.  His father asked him three times what was wrong.  Finally, the boy replied,

"That pastor said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I wanted to stay with you guys."

What is a Christian home?  A Christian home is not simply a house in which Christians live.  Rather it is a home where Christ is honored, God’s Word is discussed, children learn about faith from their parent(s), and Christian living is part of everyday life.  In short, a Christian home is a home where Christ is lifted up.

As Christian homemakers, we parents are the fundamental teachers of the Christian faith to their children.  Children watch how we live, they hear how we speak, they pick up our attitudes, and they learn to understand the world through our eyes.  As we live out our faith in our daily life, our children learn to become what we are modeling for them.

What is it that we are modeling?  Are we truly living our Christian convictions?  When the great composer Felix Mendelssohn was asked why he wrote the magnificent “Reformation Symphony,” he responded: “In those days men had convictions.  We moderns only have opinions.”

As Christians of true convictions, let’s not be afraid to express our faith as a part of our daily lives.  Martin Luther is a great example of a parent of Christian convictions who boldly stood for what he believed and he taught his family about his faith in Jesus.  We also should be such an example, knowing what God’s Word says and teaching it to our children.

May we all work diligently to build a Christian home in which Christ is honored, God’s Word is discussed, children learn about faith from their parent(s), and Christian living is part of everyday life.

In short, a Christian home is a home where Christ is lifted up!
